Water Filters: Are They Worth It?

Most of us have read or heard about the shockingly high levels of lead in the water supply to some Dublin homes, which has led to many people installing a water filter.

A water filter is an efficient and easy way of ensuring that the water supply to your home doesn’t contain any harmful levels of lead, and is also free from any other pesticides, herbicides or contaminates which may be harmful to the health of you and your family. But what types of water filters are there, and which one is most suited to you and your needs? Let’s explore.

The Different Types of Water Filter:

  • Undersink filter: installed and attached to the mains water supply under your sink, water is diverted through the filter when you turn your tap on and any impurities are removed. This includes pathogenic bacteria such as E.Coli, cysts, insecticides and herbicides. The included tap also filters any chlorine and other impurities, giving you instant access to great tasting drinking water. They are compact and fit easily under your sink, although you have to bear in mind that you will lose some under the sink storage space.
  • Shower filter: Chlorine and other chemicals in tap water often lead to reactions such as psoriasis or eczema in people with sensitive skin. Using a clean water shower filter means that you can enjoy washing in purified water free from chemicals, which can help alleviate said skin and scalp conditions.
  • Reverse osmosis system: Usually the more expensive option, they work by using a membrane to remove contaminants from water. They also remove chlorine thanks to a separate charcoal filter. The charcoal filters require a holding tank so the reverse osmosis system tank take up more space than the normal undersink filters. There are different types of osmosis systems, with some replacing the ‘good’ minerals that are lost in the process.
  • A portable water filter: a great option for when a pressurised water system is unavailable. Gives you access to clean, purified water on the move.
  • Filters that alkalize and ionize the water as well as purifying it. Different models of these differ in cost, so it’s best to shop around.

It’s important to note, that not all systems filter lead from water, so it’s always best to do research, and shop around for the best system that does what you want.

Can I Fit My Water Filter System?
