World Plumbing Day is an annual event that draws attention to the vital role that plumbing plays in global health. It runs each year on March 11th and ACR Plumbing and Heating is supporting this year’s event.
What Is World Plumbing Day?
It might seem like a strange initiative, but the reasoning behind it is sound. In developed countries like Ireland, it’s easy to take our plumbing systems for granting. We’re lucky to be able to turn on our taps and have access to clean running water. We can flush our toilets to remove waste. We can have lashings of hot water from our heating or immersion systems.
However, the World Health Organisation reports that only 68% of the world’s population have access to improved sanitation. That is 2.6 billion people who are at risk from disease and health risks associated with poor sanitation.
World Plumbing Day wants to remind us to pause for a moment and think about how important good plumbing is. It asks us to think about all the ways in which plumbing makes our daily lives better and without it, the health risks we’d be exposed too.
Things We Take For Granted
As we rush about living our lives, it’s easy to take things like good plumbing for granted. We just use bathrooms and kitchens every day as part of our lives and there is nothing wrong with that.
What World Plumbing Day is aiming to do is to draw attention to the fact that there are still parts of the world where plumbing is either non-existent or at best very basic. And because of this people suffer serious health consequences, and millions of people die because of their lack of access to clean water and ineffective sanitation. In fact, 3.1 million children die each year from water-related diseases.
We think it’s a great idea to remind ourselves that we’re lucky to have access to great plumbing in Ireland. And no matter what your position is on the Irish water debate, that’s is not the issue here. This event is about how good plumbing is not available to large sections of people in other parts of the world.
